Is FOMO Keeping You from Living Your Dream Life? (Hint: It’s probably not the kind you’re thinking of...)

Thinking about a career change but afraid to make a move? Learn how hidden FOMO may be keeping you stuck—and why the only way forward is to take a step.

This morning during my quiet time, I found myself reflecting on a different kind of FOMO—not the fear of missing out on parties, invites, or social media highlights. I’m talking about the kind of FOMO that keeps you frozen... stuck... afraid to make a move because something better might be just around the corner.

You know the kind.

Like when you're hesitant to start something new because you’re wondering, “What if a better opportunity comes along?”
Or when you swipe past a potentially great date thinking, “Eh, maybe someone even better is still out there…”
(What if instead, you just found someone to laugh with over tapas and try new shows with—even if they aren’t the one forever?)

Or how about the little stuff—like agonizing over buying the dress for that special occasion, because what if the next store has something more perfect? (Yes, I’ve been there too.)

That kind of indecision might seem harmless at first, but over time, it robs us of the actual life we could be living.

When my husband and I got into boating, we didn’t wait to figure it all out before we started. We bought a 19 ft boat to test it out. Then upgraded to a 26 ft. Then a 31 ft. Eventually, we lived a dream on a 42 ft boat, sailing down the East Coast. Every boat served a season.
But we didn’t wait for ‘someday.’ We tested the waters (literally and figuratively)—starting small, adjusting course, and letting each boat guide us to the next.

What if that’s the secret?

What if the only way to know if something is right… is to try it?

Maybe you date just to enjoy companionship.
Maybe you buy the boat—or the RV, or the house—just for this season.
Maybe you test out the new business idea as a side project or hobby.

No pressure to get it all right from the start. Just a willingness to begin.

Because the only kind of FOMO we should really fear is the fear of not using the talents and gifts God placed inside of us.
Of not living up to our potential.
Of missing the chance to hear, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Your path may not be straight. (Let’s be honest—most of them aren’t.)
There will be detours. Speed bumps. Dead ends.
But there’s also growth. Joy. Unexpected wins.

And clarity that only comes from taking the first step.

So if you’ve been stuck in decision paralysis—waiting for the perfect option or the right moment—this is your nudge. That whisper from God. The permission slip you didn’t know you needed:

You don’t have to wait. You just have to begin.
